How to Check a Circuit Breaker

A circuit breaker is where all the electrical wiring in your home converges. By following these steps, you can quickly identify and reset tripped circuit breakers, restoring power to your home.

Locating and Opening the Circuit Breaker

  1. Find the Circuit Breaker:
    • Circuit breakers are usually found in utility rooms, closets, basements, or garages.
    • Look for a small hatch or cover similar to the one in Image A.
  2. Open the Hatch:
    • Locate the square latch on one side of the hatch. This latch allows you to open the cover and view the switches inside.

Inspecting the Circuit Breaker

  1. View the Breaker Panel:
    • When you open the hatch, you will see multiple switches.
    • There is often a schematic on the hatch cover that outlines which switches control specific rooms, appliance hookups, or outlets in your home. See Image B.
  2. Check for Tripped Breakers:
    • If you lose power in your home, check the circuit breakers to see if any switches have flipped to the “off” position.
    • To reset a tripped breaker, flip the switch back to the “on” position.

What to Do if Problems Persist

  • Repeated Tripping:
    • If a circuit in your home keeps turning off, it could indicate a more serious issue.
    • Contact your property management to schedule an electrician to investigate and resolve the problem.
