Electricity powers many of the appliances and systems you use every day in your student housing apartment. Understanding what uses electricity—and how to use it more efficiently—can help you manage your monthly utility costs.
What uses electricity?
Common appliances and systems that consume electricity include:
- Refrigerators
- Electric stoves and ovens
- Microwaves, toasters, air fryers, etc.
- Air conditioning
- Heating (if not powered by gas)
- Electric clothes dryers
- Internet routers and modems
- Lighting
- TVs, gaming systems, and computers
- Phone and device chargers
Tips for Conserving Electricity
Air Conditioning
- As outdoor temperatures rise, your A/C runs more frequently.
- Set your thermostat between 75–78°F to reduce usage during warmer months.
- Avoid turning the A/C off completely when you leave—simply raise the temperature a few degrees to save energy. Turning the system off and on uses more electricity than adjusting the setting.
- Use ceiling or box fans to help circulate air and reduce reliance on the A/C.
Heating (Electric or Gas)
- When it’s colder outside, your heat runs more often.
- Set your thermostat between 65–68°F during colder months to conserve energy.
- As with A/C, avoid turning the heat off completely when leaving. Lower the temperature instead.
- Layer clothing and use blankets before increasing the heat.
Keep in Mind:
Even with conservation efforts, electricity usage will naturally increase during the summer (due to A/C use) and winter (due to heating). These tips are designed to help reduce that impact—not eliminate it entirely.
