Utility concerns are rarely due to issues with the meter itself, so meter checks should be a last resort. Before requesting one, it’s important to follow a few key steps.
Step 1: Review Your Usage Habits
Before requesting any checks, take time to analyze how utilities are being used in your apartment.
- Seasonal changes:
Electricity usage often increases in summer (A/C use) and winter (heating use). - Occupancy changes:
A spike in usage may occur when roommates move in or out, or if guests stay over.- Permanent occupancy changes can affect monthly usage moving forward.
- Temporary occupancy changes typically impact one billing cycle.
- Daily usage tracking (if available):
Look for specific spikes that align with changes in usage or occupancy. - Coordinate with roommates:
Utility usage is often shared. Talk with your roommates to align on conservation efforts.
Step 2: Submit a Maintenance Request
If your usage still seems high after reviewing habits, your next step is to request maintenance through your leasing office.
- The maintenance team can check to ensure your appliances are running efficiently.
- If you already suspect a broken or malfunctioning appliance (e.g., A/C unit), you can skip Step 1 and request maintenance immediately
Important:
If maintenance discovers and fixes an issue that impacted your utility usage, you can contact Conservice to request a billing adjustment for the affected period.
Step 3: Contact Conservice Customer Service
Still seeing unusual utility usage after completing Steps 1 and 2?
You may now contact Conservice Customer Service to discuss a possible meter check.
When you reach out, be prepared to review:
- Your current usage amount
- Your usage habits
- Any maintenance work performed by your property
Please note:
If your usage appears normal based on your property’s average and your provided details, a meter check may not be submitted.
This three-step process also applies to gas and water meter check requests. You can also view our Leak/Meter Checklist for water for additional guidance.
