Knowing where your water shut-off valves are can be crucial if your home has an active leak, if the water seems to be shut off and you need to turn it on, or if you need to perform repair work in your home.
Water Main Shutoff
Water main shutoff valves are often located in a central location where other utility lines are accessible, usually in a garage, basement, crawl space, or utility closet. Most often, water main valves are found near the water heater in your home. Alternatively, there may be a utility box in the front yard of your home that specifically says WATER on it.
Most water valves operate as follows:
- Close by turning the handle to the right (clockwise) so that it’s perpendicular to the pipe.
- Open by turning the handle to the left (counterclockwise) so that it’s parallel to the pipe.
Water valves may have different handle types, such as:
- Long Straight Handle: As shown in the images below.
- Round Handle.
Example: In Image 1 below, the water main valves are located in a utility room next to the water heater. In Image 2, note that valve A is open (the handle is parallel to the pipe), and valve B is closed (the handle is perpendicular to the pipe), which is typically done for outside water during winter months.

Appliance Shut-Offs
Most water-using appliances have their own shut-off valves for easy access and control. Here are common locations:
- Water Heaters: Shut-off valves are usually found above the water heater, often with a green handle. (See Image A.)
- Toilets: Shut-off valves are located just behind the toilet, connecting the tank to the floor or wall. (See Image B.)
- Sinks: Shut-off valves are situated below the sink, typically inside a cupboard or countertop shelving. Note that sinks usually have two valves: one for hot water and one for cold water. (See Image C.)
By familiarizing yourself with the locations and operation of these valves, you can quickly and effectively manage water flow in your home during maintenance or emergencies.
